- Various tests are conducted in the upper atmosphere utilizing rockets and missiles launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. The spectacular displays left in the evening sky can sometimes be seen from all over the Southwestern United States
This set of photos were taken October 1999 from the Santa Monica Mountains about 80 miles away. This second photo shows the prismatic cloud of exhaust that is scattering sunlight in the upper atmosphere. The first photo show the stage separation and exhaust plume.
