Constellation Scorpius

- The stars of the night sky have been divided and mapped since ancient times. With this mapping the imaginative shapes and legends of the constellations were created.
This photo of the constellation Scorpius shows, enlarged in their true color, the main "naked eye" stars that make up the shape of "the scorpion". This is a natural photographic technique with the various effects created during a single exposure of the film. The Scorpion is clearly seen with its head at the upper right, its long body and tail running across the photo, with a stinger at the lower left.
Also seen here is the deep detail in this region of the sky including many deep space nebulae and star clusters. The cloud-like structure divided by numerous dark lanes & patches is the Milky Way as we look in the direction of our galaxies center. The Milky Way is the accumulated glow of starlight from the billions of distant stars that make up the disk of our galaxy.
