Rocket Cloud, Moon & Venus, wide view

Pentax 6x7 camera w/165 mm lens @ f/4 on Kodak VC 400

photo by Bill and Sally Fletcher

This photo was taken with a medium format camera but somehow it looks more like a Japanese water color than an actual photograph. The moon shows the reflected "Earthshine" (sunlight reflected off the Earth and back to the lunar surface) with great detail for being small in the photo and the "noctalucent looking" cloud has spread it's color throughout the sky.

Various tests are conducted in the upper atmosphere utilizing rockets and missiles launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. The spectacular displays left in the evening sky can sometimes be seen from all over the Southwestern United States. We took this photo from the Santa Monica Mountains about 80 miles from the launch. This was one of the more spectacular launch clouds we've seen.
