The Scorpius Complex - Rho Ophiuchus

Tri-color on Technical Pan film - 8" f/1.5 Schmidt Camera/telescope

- This is a wide field Schmidt camera photo of the Scorpio/Ophiuchus star clouds. The diversity of color in this region is remarkable and unusual.

The bright yellow star in this photo is Antares, one of the brightest stars in the sky. It is lighting up the surrounding region with a yellow-orange glow. The star Rho Ophiuchus is responsible for the blue-violet nebula. The dark streamers are dust and non-luminous gas that trail many degrees of sky over to our galaxy's center. The tightly packed cluster of stars also seen in this photo is globular star cluster M4 -
