Framed Photo - Horsehead Nebula
"The Horsehead Nebula"
Back To Photo List

Scattered throughout the heavens are great clouds of gas and dust known as nebulae. The Horsehead Nebula is in the constellation of Orion and is part of an unusual combination of several types of nebulae.

The "dark" nebula making the horsehead shape is a great obscuring cloud of dark dust and non-luminous gas. It is made visible as a huge silhouette rising up into a long glowing strip of bright red "emission" nebula. The blue regions are "reflection" nebula, reflecting light of nearby stars.

The horsehead itself is about 1 light year in diameter - which is 70,000 times the distance between the Earth and the Sun
