The Crab Nebula

Tri-color on Technical Pan film - 16" f/4.5 Newtonian telescope

- The Crab Nebula - M1 is a supernova remnant. The supernova explosion that created it occurred in the year 1054 and is recorded in Chinese history as a "guest star".

As time passes the remnant debris continues to travel further out into space. Compared to other supernova remnants, this is very small and compact since it has had less than a thousand years to expand out into space. The center star of this nebula is a well studied "pulsar" that spins at an astonishing 30 times per second.
